US terrorist warning is a political warning

by Salaamedia Intern

Sandton – President Ramaphosa criticized the US for failing to discuss the terror alert with government before issuing it. The US embassy’s warning of a possible terrorist attack in Sandton on Saturday has been relayed by the British, Canadian and Australian high commissions. The German and French embassies in Pretoria all relayed it to their citizens.

Na’eem Jeenah, Executive Director of the Afro-Middle East Centre, noted most of these alerts are issued for political reasons rather than anything else. In the case of this alert, he noticed something strange.

“The United States issues these kinds of warnings for its citizens to be aware of places that might be dangerous, which is fine for any country to do. Usually, these announcements are made on the website of the State Department for its citizens that are going to be travelling. In this case, the announcement is only on the embassy website. Not on the State Department website which means that Americans that are wanting to travel to South Africa and look at the State Department website get no warning which makes no sense of course.”

The United States were sending a political warning to South Africa

With the State Department not having the warning on their website and the US not informing the government, Jeenah believes this indicates the warning was more political than anything else. He further bases this on an incident that occurred a few years back.

“There was a group of South Africans that went to Syria, joined ISIS and then returned some months later. Their return was facilitated from Turkey by the South African government. They were all issued new passports … All of this was very secret. The week before they were due to land in South Africa the US embassy issued an announcement like this one saying that they have intelligence about a possible terror attack in within the next week. Again, like this time around, the announcement wasn’t on the State Department website. Only on the embassy website.”

There was no attack that took place. State security was quite clear there was no threat. It was a warning to the South African government. The real question for Jeenah is what the South African government is doing now to warrant a threat from the US.

EFF wants the US to produce evidence

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) released a statement calling on the USA Embassy in South Africa to back up their attack claims with evidence. While the warning is very vague and offers very little specifics, Jeenah doesn’t believe it is part of a false flag operation.

“Firstly, a false flag operation is not that plausible in the South African context. Secondly, I don’t believe that the Americans have any need or will benefit in any serious way by any such operation in South Africa at this stage. What I am saying is I don’t think there is any security threat whether genuine or false flag.”
