Mustapha’s Call from the Heart: Uniting the Global Community for Palestine

by Thaabit Kamaar

Johannesburg – Around the globe, millions of people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and creeds have come together in a united display of solidarity. They have adorned themselves in the colours of red, black, white, and green, harmonising in a powerful refrain of “free free Palestine” to support the Palestinian people’s enduring occupation.

In a worldwide anthem of freedom, liberation, and self-determination, people globally are vocalising their dissent against their governments and the televised genocide unfolding in Gaza.

Hundreds of thousands march alongside national leaders, local celebrities, activists, and solidarity organisations in bustling urban centres across the planet, forging a formidable alliance within civil society.

Amidst these impactful demonstrations, one individual from Lenasia in Johannesburg stands out for his distinctive approach to raising awareness.

Muhammed Mustapha takes to the streets on his bicycle, proudly displaying a Palestinian flag above him, its colours unfurling in the wind. Through this personal and unconventional method, he spreads the message of the Palestinian struggle.

Positioned in the heart of a shopping centre, Mustapha calls upon the global community to unite and support Palestine.

“My heart ardently desires that all residents and all those peacefully protesting and having rallies in all countries take their flags and mount them on your houses, businesses and vehicles.”

Mustapha Calls for a Ceasefire in Gaza

Amidst the chaos, brutality, and distress, a modest man, humbly dressed and expressing himself with quiet sincerity, extends a heartfelt appeal to humanity.

Regardless of one’s faith or background, Mustapha earnestly calls upon individuals to unite in applying collective pressure on governments, especially those aligned with Israel. His plea is for an urgent ceasefire, imploring them not to relent to a “pause” in the ongoing massacres.

In a voice marked by both sternness and the wisdom of age, free from bias and pretentiousness, he advocates for an end to the suffering and loss of life endured by the Palestinian people.

“The unfair, cowardly brutality [inflicted] on our children is unacceptable.”

Mustapha’s expression resonates as a universal plea for morality and compassion. The unacceptable suffering endured by children requires not only condemnation but also prompt and meaningful action from the global community.

Regardless of nationality, political allegiance, or the sides involved in the conflict, safeguarding the lives of the vulnerable should serve as an unwavering principle.

Regrettably, we observe people, including parents, scrolling through images and videos of bloodied, burned, and dismembered children, opting for neutrality. This is quite shocking to say the least.

Refraining from acknowledging the wrongfulness of such actions is disheartening and cowardly. I hope that we can discover within ourselves the courage exemplified by that soiled, bruised, and tearful orphaned Palestinian girl who steadfastly refuses to surrender to much more superior force, even as her world collapses around her into ashes.
