At least 40 people have died in an attack on El-Obeid, a key centre in Sudan’s North Kordofan region. The United Nations reported the casualties on Wednesday.

Recently, Sudan’s Defence Minister, Yassin Ibrahim, rejected a US truce proposal. Ibrahim stated firmly that the army would continue fighting.

This escalates the devastating conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which first erupted in April 2023 and has caused widespread destruction and displacement.

Humanitarian crisis deepens

The World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a severe warning that famine could soon spread across the entire country. With the risk of mass starvation no longer an isolated issue, millions are at risk and unable to access basic services.

The ongoing violence makes the situation worse. The attack on El-Obeid is a major blow as the is a vital logistics and transport hub. Instability has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises.
