The Australian government is set to introduce new gun control legislation following a deadly terror attack at Bondi Beach on Sunday. A father and son opened fire on a crowd celebrating the first night of Hanukkah. The attack left 15 people dead and many more injured.

New South Wales Premier Chris Minns has recalled parliament to address the “urgent legislation”. The proposed reforms may include capping the number of firearms an individual can own. It could also involve re-classifying certain types of shotguns.

The attack was carried out by Sajid Akram, 50, and his son, Naveed Akram, 24. Sajid Akram was killed at the scene. His son, Naveed, was taken to hospital and has reportedly woken from a coma. Police are waiting to formally question him.

Authorities have described the shooting as a “terrorist incident” targeting Jewish Australians. The attack shocked the nation and led to widespread calls for action.

In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met with state and territory leaders. They agreed to strengthen the country’s firearm laws. This includes speeding up the creation of a National Firearms Register. The register will create a nationwide database of firearms owners and licences. The government also plans to use more criminal intelligence in the licensing process.

The community is in mourning. Funerals for the victims have begun, including for British-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger. At least 17 people remain in hospitals across Sydney. One patient is in a critical condition.

The youngest victim was a 10-year-old girl named Matilda. The oldest was an 87-year-old Holocaust survivor. The final night of Hanukkah will still be celebrated at Bondi Beach.
