For decades, Malawian migrants have been shifting south looking for economic prospects in South Africa. Many of them found work as muadhins, or callers to prayer from the minarets of mosques around the country. Inadvertently interaction between the Muslim Malawians and non-Muslims in South Africa resulted in the former inviting the latter to the religion. This interview re-looks the often neglected contribution they have made to the growth of Islam in South Africa.
