Keeping COVID-19 out of South Africa’s Impoverished Community

by Salaamedia

Situated in the informal settlement of Mountain View in the South of Johannesburg, sits the modest Al-Mubarak Islamic Centre, a complete prayer facility for both males and females, and a learning centre for the children of the area. What is up until now a safe haven for the community’s children and adults, could become an easy target for the Coronavirus outbreak. The Salaamedia team drove down to the centre on Wednesday to educate the children and their parents on the outbreak, hand-out bars of soap, and pamphlets containing information on how to curb the coronavirus.

In an interview with Salaamedia, the daughter of the centre’s Imam, Majida Pitso said the following: “Today was actually the first time I was properly informed about the Coronavirus. Before Salaamedia’s presentation today, I had been getting false information about the virus via social media.”

When asked how the Coronavirus outbreak has affected the centre, emotional Pitso told Salaamedia that some people are afraid to come to the centre even to perform their Salaah.

“When I first heard about the Coronavirus, I told the students how they can protect themselves against the virus from the little I knew about it.”

“The biggest challenge at the centre in light of the outbreak,” expressed Pitso, “is the fact that we are unable to afford basic hygiene products such as soaps and hand sanitizers.”

Lastly, Pitso thanked Salaamedia for distributing bars of soap and pamphlets as she is confident that this will assist the centre and its beneficiaries to protect themselves against the outbreak.
