“Islamic media is now mainstream” – Shafiq Morton.

Shafiq Morton, an award-winning Cape Town-based photo-journalist and radio presenter, told Salaamedia that Islamic broadcasters and journalists have played an absolutely critical role in the mainstream media since the September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre and other important sites in the United States of America.

Morton was speaking on the Tribute to Muslim Broadcasters segment this morning when he emphasized the role of Islamic media in society.

“I fully believe that we [Islamic media] are mainstream, particularly in a country like South Africa where we have freedoms that many other people don’t enjoy.”

He has over 30 years of experience and has covered South African stories such as the anti-apartheid campaign, the release of Nelson Mandela, and the 1994 elections.

Morton is the first Muslim journalist to be featured on Salaamedia’s Tribute to Muslim Broadcasters segment which is an exclusive Ramadan broadcast on our platform, inspired by the late Ebrahim Gangat who was well known for his broadcasting talent.
