Karnataka – An online video sparked outrage after showing a hijab-wearing Muslim student being heckled by a Hindu far-right mob as she entered college.

Protests have intensified in Karnataka over students not being allowed to wear Islamic headscarves and being locked out of their classrooms. School administration say the hijab is not part of the uniform and students are therefore breaking the rules.

Muskan Khan is seen arriving at her college in Mandy before she is confronted by men who were themselves donned in saffron scarves. The men can be heard shouting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ (Hail Lord Ram) before Khan confronts them and shouts back ‘Allah Akbar’ (God is great) while she raises her first into the air.

In another online video, Muslim male students are seen sitting outside a campus in a show of solidarity and support for the Muslim women who have been barred from entering.

A case has been filed by one of the students in the Karnataka High Court in the state capital Bengaluru stating that wearing the hijab was a fundamental right to religion guaranteed by the constitution.

Karnataka High Court’s single bench of Justice Krishna Dixit refers petitions challenging the ban on hijab in colleges to a larger bench.
