Today is Day two of the ANC’s national elective conference. The five-day convention of delegates of the ruling party is taking place in Nasrec, south of Johannesburg. Here’s what you can expect after Friday’s rocky start to the conference.
Party president Cyril Ramaphosa’s opening address was delayed by seven hours due to registration issues. This meant that much of yesterday’s programme will be carried over to Saturday.
This includes the additional nominations of National Officials, which could get heated. However, before that can even happen, there are several reports that delegates must run through before moving forward. The adoption of the organisational report, delivery of the financial report and constitutional amendments are standing in the way of today’s agenda.
If it’s not already too late, delegates may then go ahead with the official programme for today. The adoption of credentials must first be done. This is the process of accreditation for voting delegates. Once this process has been completed, delegates will begin voting for the positions of President, Deputy President, National Chair, Secretary General and their deputy, and finally the Treasurer General. This was scheduled to begin at 08:30 on Saturday, but remains delayed at time of publication.
The voting session will be followed by a closed session during which delegates are expected to discuss renewal of the organisation. There will also be several briefings by commissions during the course of the session.
There will be two more closed sessions before the official announcement of newly-elected officials. The ANC’s official programme for the day indicates this should happen by 21:00, but owing to Friday’s delays, this could either occur much later in the evening and possibly in the early hours of Sunday or be postponed until Sunday.
Delegates are then expected to vote for additional members of the national executive committee (NEC), and the day’s programme wraps up with a meeting of the Drafting and Resolutions Committee.
Salaamedia will bring you the latest as and when it happens, on air and online throughout the conference live from Nasrec.
