13th South African National Quran Memorisation Competition Finals in Laudium

by Zahid Jadwat

The 13th South African National Quran Memorisation Competition Finals is set to take place at Masjid-Al-Nur, Laudium, this weekend. Dozens of contestants from across the country will participate in the competition.

The South African National Quran Council hosted the first competition all the way back in 2001, and has since successfully hosted subsequent instalments.

Speaking in an interview on Salaamedia, Fatima Jogee said the organisers were anticipating more than 120 guests, including 50 contestants. The competition would host parallel sessions between male and female contestants.

“There’s two; the males’ finals and the females’ as well. We will ensure that it is completely separate and we will have our own spaces,” she said.

The contestants – aged between 10 and 24 years-old – will be further divided into three categories. This would be based on how much of the Qur’an has been memorised by each contestant.

Jogee said the event was also meant to be an opportunity for contestants to connect with and motivate each other. Although the competition remained restricted to South African reciters, she said there was also a hope the competition would go global in time to come.

“We wanted to make this a weekend for the contestants to enjoy and remember. It’s a chance for them to interact with each other,” she said.

“This is the word of Allah. We should make the effort to recite it in the way it ought to be recited. We make an effort in so many other things in this dunya (world), but we sometimes forget this gift that Allah has given us.

The competition takes place at Masjid-Al-Nur in Laudium, Gauteng, on Saturday 14 January 2023. The event is open to all free of charge and will feature prominent reciters and scholars, including Mufti Ismail Menk and Qari Basheer Patel.
