The Uwais Qarni Islamic Centres Day for Free Medical Screening

by Thaabit Kamaar

The Uwais Qarni Islamic Centre, in conjunction with the Islamic Medical Association, will host its free medical screening day on the 25 of February. The initiative was started in 2012 and continued annually until the Covid-19 pandemic, which enforced social distancing.

Regular health screening assists in detecting possible underlying diseases or if an individual is at risk of developing said diseases or conditions. Screening allows practitioners to see health problems early on, making future treatments more effective.

The Aim of the Initiative

The free medical screening initiative was started to commemorate the life, love and mercy of the beloved Prophet Muhammed (saw).

Kamraan Khan of the IMA said the initiative was a massive success over the years since its inception, and he hopes, since the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, it will continue for years to come.

The aim is to give people a basic understanding of their physical health, mind, and spirit. Therefore, anyone looking to follow up on their needs and health requirements is urged to attend.

Khan said, “As human beings, we are made of body, mind and spirit. We can be at our optimum best when we are healthy in all three aspects of our lives. So, we try to create a holistic approach to basic health understanding on this day.”

The UQIC and the IMA welcomes people of different races, cultural backgrounds, creeds and genders to attend the event for free medical check-ups.

Services That Will be Provided

Various screenings will take place, such as weight, height and BMI, eye and dental screening, HIV/AIDs testing, glucose and blood pressure testing, counselling, and so on. Numerous health faculties will be available, such as medical doctors, optometrists, dentists, physiotherapists and psychologists.

Khan encourages all health practitioners, medical students and community members, looking to assist with the screening, activities and meal distribution, to participate in the initiative.

“As a community and society, we all have skills and experiences that we can offer one another. The purpose of this day is to bridge the gaps within our communities, build bridges and reconnect as a society. So that we may come together and help one another grow and be a better society.”

Individuals who want to participate in the event should visit the Islamic Medical Association website for further information or contact the Uwais Qarni Islamic Centre at 084 701 3208.
