Gauteng transforms into a Christmas Wonderland in July

Gauteng – Christmas in July has really lived up to its name for citizens in Gauteng. In a delightful twist of meteorological mischief, the South African province, decided to throw its residents a spontaneous Christmas in July extravaganza. The weather, apparently feeling a bit playful, conspired to transform the usually balmy region into a winter wonderland.

Temperatures plummeted down to levels more suitable for polar bears than for sun-loving South Africans and by the time the clock struck 8 am, Gauteng had transformed into a real-life Christmas movie set. Streets and rooftops, once bereft of snow, now glistened and sparkled like a million tiny diamonds.

Once the snow started to fall, many people like Maryam Peer rushed to create a snowman. Since not much snow had fallen, instead of a huge human like snowman, she created a tiny, cute snowman.

“I don’t know how I feel about the snow. It makes me feel like I am in one of those American Christmas movies. Like some people will just start singing jingle bells. The snow still looks very fake, but it is softer than I imagined it to be. I thought it would be more crunchy, definitely not soft.”

Even animals were excited to see this newfound wonder. Aadila Rawat Amojee, let her cat out to play in the snow and is hoping for more.

“I built a little snowman. It kind of feels like I was in that show Gilmore Girls this morning. It is freezing but it is worth it for the snow. The snow is kind of crunchy but maybe it is because not a lot fell, so I am hoping more does fall later today. I was definitely excited for it but so was the cat. She just sat by the window staring at it so I thought why not? Let her go out and experience this once in a lifetime miracle.”

Last week, South Africans received a frosty heads-up that Mother Nature had a mischievous cold front up her sleeve. The South African Weather Service (Saws) issued an official warning to brace for a freezing cold front. From Friday through Monday, the entire country was poised to enter a deep freeze, with temperatures daring to plunge and reminding everyone that winter had no intention of leaving quietly.
