South Africa – Tasneem Adams, News Producer at eTV, views Women’s Month as a tribute to women, a recognition of their accomplishments and their relentless conquest of everyday challenges. Additionally, considering the troubling issues faced by women in South Africa, such as sexual assault and gender-based violence, Women’s Month serves as a call for continuous efforts by South Africans to champion the advancement of women in all spheres of society, be it within their households or workplaces.

“It’s a celebration of where we’ve come as women but also where we’re going to … It’s a celebration of the achievements that we’ve made, but we still have a lot to do. To improve the lives of women who are conflicted and faced with so many challenges as mothers, as sisters and as breadwinners.”

Tasneem’s Early Career in Media

The realm of media provided Adams with an arena where her talents could flourish, enabling her to weave narratives and express her creativity. From a young age, her innate creativity extended to fashion design.

Yet, as time progressed, Adams became increasingly captivated by the world of radio, and this intrigue gradually expanded to encompass a broader spectrum of media disciplines. Adams’s unwavering pursuit of that aspiration drove every step from that point onward.

Commencing her career as a radio journalist, she steadily ascended through the ranks, assuming diverse roles over time. However, Adams encountered a phase of stagnation which began to stifle her creative impulses. She sought uncharted territory, yearning for fresh challenges and a new environment.

“I wanted to do something new, and it was a leap of faith. I decided to apply for the job and eventually got my break in TV news as I’d always wanted to do. Not in front of the camera but at least behind the scenes, and I think it’s been phenomenal.”

Life in Television

Adams said her long-standing aspiration was to participate in TV news production. She highlighted that television offers an exceptional environment which encourages her to unleash her creative essence, demanding her to engage, acquire different proficiencies, and master the technical intricacies of visual storytelling.

“It’s been a phenomenal journey having to learn new skills and actually tell stories in a different way … I love the team aspect of it, the fact that we have to work like a close-knit unit. It’s a well-oiled machine. We work cohesively, and I’ve got a newfound appreciation for how TV works, what it takes to compile a 13-minute news bulletin and the amount of work that goes on behind the scenes.”

While she finds contentment in her current pursuits, Adams harbours aspirations of expanding her presence in front of the camera and delving into the nuances of social media, intending to become more actively involved in that domain.

Imparting wisdom to young individuals, Adams encourages them to forge their unique paths, leveraging the opportunities presented by the digital landscape to nurture growth, express creativity, and tell their stories.
