Bisan’s Influence Shines in a Heartfelt Palestinian Cuisine Tribute

Johannesburg – Amidst the 69th day of Israel’s ongoing bombardment of Gaza, the global community persists in urging a ceasefire. Despite a unanimous UN General Assembly vote in favour of a ceasefire, excluding the United States and Israel, reports indicate that Israel remains steadfast in its determination to continue the assault on Gaza, disregarding yet another UN resolution.

With the apparent inability of heads of state to curb Israeli military actions, one might wonder how individuals can contribute to alleviating the plight of Palestinians. The answer is straightforward, continue spreading the Palestinian narrative and provide financial assistance wherever possible.

In light of the unsettling reality we face, where a semblance of normality is disrupted, ending Palestinian suffering appears to be a crucial step towards restoring balance. The most immediate connection we have to the Palestinians is through global humanitarian agencies operating in various Palestinian territories, individuals who risk their lives for the well-being of others.

At present, the most effective way to support Palestinians is by raising funds and directing them to these aid agencies, with the hope the resources will contribute to the basic needs of innocent Palestinians, providing food, clothing, and shelter.

Across the nation, people have rallied to this cause, exemplified by Yasmien Touffie, Founder of Covered Official, collaborating with Ozzy’s Kitchen for the event titled “Eat with a Purpose.”

“Eat with purpose is an event [for Palestinians], and we’re calling on our community to come and enjoy a good Palestinian lunch with us. It will be hosted at Ozzy’s Kitchen on the 3rd of February in 2024.”

Palestinian Journalist Inspired the Event

Touffie drew inspiration for the event from Palestinian Journalist Bisan, who advocated for a collective gathering and a display of unity during these challenging times.

“Bisan, one of the journalists reporting [from Gaza] … Her words stuck to us when she said, please enjoy your life, eat together, pray together and come together because they do not have that there. That’s when we decided, okay, let’s see what we can do.”

Amidst a backdrop of difficulty, deception, and unease, the necessity for the support of family, friends, and like-minded individuals becomes apparent. While various factors have the potential to unite us, few things foster a stronger connection than the act of sharing a meal.

It is with this understanding that Touffie, alongside her collaborators, saw the opportunity to express solidarity with Palestinians by organising an event centred around authentic Palestinian cuisine. In doing so, they aim to foster a sense of unity during these trying times and raise funds for the cause.
