Masjid Dur Rahman Receives Overwhelming Support as Investigation Continues

by Thaabit Kamaar

Durban – According to Mosque Trustee Yusuf Desai, the investigation into the attempted bombing at Masjid Dur Rahman in Durban North is still ongoing.

Despite the fears and concerns surrounding the incident, Desai noted that it has only strengthened community solidarity. The Mosque has received overwhelming support from both the Muslim community and people of other faiths.

Although the investigation is still in progress, the Mosque has taken proactive steps to ensure the safety of those who attend daily prayers, instilling a sense of reassurance and safety in the community.

Since the incident over a week ago, additional lighting and camera surveillance have been installed. Mosque members and security personnel also patrol the perimeter during prayer times.

“Whenever the Salah jamaat takes place, two or three brothers walk around the perimeter of the Masjid and monitor the entrance and exit areas to observe anything suspicious.”

“After the Salah jamaat is over, these three brothers make their own jamaat. This is very rewarding and an area where we need people to get involved in security. Many hands make light work, so it’s very important.”

The Importance of Protecting Our Places of Worship

Despite the uncertainty about the perpetrators and the initial suspicion that it was an Islamophobic attack, Desai believes it was carried out by individuals who do not understand the essence of Islam, its teachings, or its followers.

“It could be an Islamophobic attack, we don’t know. It could be a lone wolf, or somebody envious of the work we do there at the Masjid [because we do a lot of social work].”

The incident at Masjid Dur Rahman underscores a broader issue in our country, the targeting of places of worship. These sites, traditionally sanctuaries of safety and peace for all those who follow various faiths, have often been violated by criminals, undermining both the sanctity of religious spaces and the communal harmony they symbolise.

For these reasons, Desai urges community members to get involved and ensure that all places of worship, whether mosques, churches, synagogues, or temples, are protected. This call to action encourages everyone to take responsibility for the safety of our communal spaces.
