Learners, teachers and staff at Greyville Primary School in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, were elated to receive a borehole to meet their water needs. The borehole will improve the wellbeing of the community.
In observance of Mandela Day on Thursday, Salaamedia and Frimax Foods officially launched the borehole. It will ensure an uninterrupted supply of clean water at a time when the rest of the city battles intermittent disruptions.
Ponty Moletsane, chief operations officer (COO) at Salaamedia, told those gathered to witness the handing over ceremony: “Access to clean, safe water is a fundamental human right and today we take a significant step towards fulfilling that right of our learners and the community of Extension 2”.
“This borehole will not only provide clean drinking water but also support better health, hygiene and overall well being for everyone who benefits from it,” he added.

Operational costs
The installation of the borehole came at a “crucial time” for the school, said Afeera Khan. The principal was most relieved that the borehole would reduce its operational costs and thus make it easier to focus on what mattered.
“With reduced operational costs, we can redirect our financial resources towards enhancing educational programmes, maintaining our facilities, and creating a more conducive environment for all,” she stated.
Also at the event was Roland Moodley, manager of Frimax Foods in Gauteng. As the sponsor of the borehole, he said the company decided to play its part this Mandela Day.
“On this special day, Frimax Foods has made the decision to give back by sponsoring a borehole to Greyville Primary School. May this special day bring appreciation to the teachers and encouragement to the learners,” he said.
The learners at Greyville Primary School, thrilled to be part of this milestone in their school’s history, expressed appreciation through dance, song and poetry.
