Gaza – The selection of Yahya Sinwar as the new Hamas leader signals an important shift for Palestinians in Gaza. Dr Farhin Delawala from Media Review Network points out that with the recent assassination of former Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, this change in leadership ushers in a new chapter in Gaza’s political landscape.
“[The appointment of] Sinwar continues to influence the dynamics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, especially what is happening now in Gaza. With regards to his leadership, he has been very much characterised by both strict governance within Gaza and an unwavering commitment to resistance against Israel.”
The assassination of Haniyeh, allegedly by Israel, was a significant blow to Hamas, the Palestinians in Gaza, and the ongoing ceasefire negotiations. However, Dr Delawala believes that the swift appointment of Sinwar provided a renewed sense of direction and hope for the Palestinian people, who have been enduring Israeli ethnic cleansing for over ten months.
“I think it is a huge blow for them; however, the Palestinians remain steadfast in their belief and their right to self-determination and freedom for their people. So, in that sense, they have not been deterred in their faith and continue to remain steadfast in their belief that there will certainly be a day when they will be free and Palestine will be free. With what Hamas is doing, we can see that it has continued to instil faith in the Palestinian people, and they are not wavering in their support for the Palestinians.”

How Will His Appointment Impact the Ceasefire Negotiations?
Given Sinwar’s military background, decades-long incarceration, and deep-seated commitment to resisting Israeli occupation, his appointment signals a more hardline approach within the resistance movement.
This shift raises significant concerns about the outcome of the ongoing ceasefire negotiation between Hamas and Israel. However, Dr Delawala noted that Sinwar has previously been directly involved in various negotiations and deals with Israel, including prisoner exchanges, which could potentially influence the negotiation dynamics.
While his credentials and reputation suggest a firm stance against Israel, his history of prioritising the needs of the Palestinian people indicates a willingness to seek practical resolutions, including an end to the genocide in Gaza.
“Sinwar’s election marks a shift towards a more hardline military leadership within the organisation because he is known for his military stance and also prioritises the Palestinian resistance. In terms of his involvement in the negotiations for ceasefires, he has been at the forefront.”
“He has always been involved in ceasefire negotiations and prisoner exchange deals with Israel. Despite his staunch opposition to Israel and its establishment, he is always ready and willing to negotiate deals with Israel.”
