Dada Morero, mayor of Johannesburg, has said residents can expect a more reliable water supply in the new year. Swathes of the city recently experienced a days-long water outage due to maintenance.
“It should be better in 2025,” he told SABC News on Wednesday. He added that residents could expect “major problems” to have flushed out of the system by then.
The mayor visited several reservoirs two days after Rand Water completed maintenance. While the bulk supplier was working on it, residents wondered where their mayor was in their hour of need.
He also said the maintenance was a “necessary exercise” that could not be done at any other time.
“We had to do it now and not postpone it. In December, we normally experience lower numbers as people start leaving the province. Others will start coming to the province by the 23rd and 24th and we really want them to come in numbers and spend their Christmas in Johannesburg,” he continued.
“We can make a commitment that our residents will have water on the day of Christmas because it’s important. It’s also important that people can visit Johannesburg over the Christmas period and spend their money in Johannesburg.”
With the work complete by Monday night, water supply has been restored to most affected areas.
