World – The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed deep regret over the United States’ decision to withdraw from the Organization. For over 70 years, WHO has been vital in addressing global health issues, strengthening health systems, and responding to emergencies, including disease outbreaks.

The United States, as a founding member since 1948, has been pivotal in shaping the organisation’s work and actively participating in its governance. However, earlier this week, Donald Trump signed several executive orders on the first day of his second term, including one formalising the U.S. withdrawal from WHO.

A statement from the White House explained that the decision was driven by concerns over the WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, its response to other global health crises, and “its failure to adopt urgently needed reforms, and its inability to demonstrate independence from the inappropriate political influence of WHO member states.”

Trump also accused the WHO of imposing an unfair financial burden on the U.S., stating, “Let’s say we have 325 million people, they [China] had 1.4 billion. They were paying $39 million. We were paying $500 million. It seemed a little unfair to me.”

Despite these criticisms, WHO emphasised the achievements of its partnership with the U.S., noting that their collaboration has eradicated smallpox, nearly eliminated polio, and saved countless lives.

“For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats. Together, we ended smallpox, and together, we have brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO.”

“With the participation of the United States and other Member States, WHO has over the past 7 years implemented the largest set of reforms in its history to transform our accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in countries. This work continues,” the organisation stated.

The WHO remains hopeful that the United States will revisit its decision and looks forward to engaging in meaningful dialogue to uphold the partnership, which is crucial for the health and well-being of millions across the globe.
