Johannesburg – Following the Lenasia Magistrate Court shooting on 21 January 2025, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mamoloko Kubayi, announced immediate measures to enhance security for “high-risk” matters.

The incident, which occurred just metres from the court entrance, tragically claimed the life of a 27-year-old witness who was due to testify in a murder case.

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development condemned the act, calling it a “heinous and deplorable attack” on the rule of law and a direct threat to the justice system.

Minister Kubayi stated, “I can confirm that in less than 24 hours, the Department, in collaboration with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the South African Police Service (SAPS), is implementing enhanced security measures for high-risk cases.”

“This includes an integrated security plan and a comprehensive threat and risk assessment to protect witnesses and court officials. These measures will ensure that Lenasia Magistrate Court public safety and security is urgently restored.”

Kabayi emphasized the need to protect court users, stating that “the security breach violates the core of the Court administration system.” She reiterated that courts must always serve as safe havens and uphold their role as custodians of justice for all citizens.

Furthermore, she commended SAPS for their swift action, which averted further harm and confirmed that court operations would continue as normal. Psychological support is being provided to affected court staff.

“The Department calls on members of the public to assist SAPS with any information that could aid the investigation and ultimately lead to a successful prosecution.”

“Protecting and strengthening our justice system is a collective responsibility, and together, we must uphold the rule of law and resolve disputes within the framework of the Constitution.”
