JOHANNESBURG – In a significant move to enhance public transport affordability and accessibility, Gautrain has introduced its new ‘KlevaMova’ product. This initiative offers eligible commuters a substantial 50% discount on train fares and has drastically reduced daily parking fees at Gautrain stations to just R1 for train users for a promotional period.
The KlevaMova discount programme, announced on Tuesday is designed to make Gauteng’s rapid rail service more accessible to a wider segment of the population. Eligibility for the 50% fare reduction extends to several groups:
- Individuals residing in households with a combined annual income of R350,000 or less.
- Students under the age of 25.
- Scholars.
- Pensioners.
- Recipients of the South African Social Security Agency’s (SASSA) disability grant.
This discount applies specifically to Gautrain train fares and is available for Weekly, Monthly, and return trip products. Prospective beneficiaries of the KlevaMova offering must apply by submitting the necessary documentation and will undergo an approval and verification process to confirm their eligibility.

Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, stated that the initiative is a key part of the government’s strategy to integrate more residents into the public transport system.
“KlevaMova forms part of government’s efforts to make the Gautrain more accessible to a large share of the population in Gauteng, attract a diverse range of passengers across income groups, and ensure that cost is not a barrier to accessing an efficient, safe, and convenient public transport service,” Diale-Tlabela said.
The MEC highlighted that high transport costs remain a significant burden for many households, particularly those situated far from economic centres due to historical spatial planning. Data from the Gauteng Household Travel Survey indicated that in 2019/20, nearly 60% of households in the province spent more than 10% of their income on public transport. The KlevaMova product aims to alleviate this financial pressure.
In addition to the fare discounts, all Gautrain passengers who use the train service can benefit from a reduced parking fee of R1 per day. This special parking rate is effective from 1 April 2025 to 31 July 2025.
The introduction of these more affordable options aligns with Gauteng’s 25-Year Integrated Transport Master Plan (ITMP25), which prioritises the development of a passenger rail network as the cornerstone of a modernised and integrated transport system for the province. Officials anticipate that encouraging more people to use rail transport will lead to numerous benefits, including reduced road congestion, fewer traffic accidents, and lower carbon dioxide emissions.
Interested individuals can find more information about the discount and the application process by contacting Gautrain’s toll-free number at 0800 428 87246 (0800 GAUTRAIN), visiting the official Gautrain website at www.gautrain.co.za, or by inquiring at any Gautrain station (excluding the O.R.
