Flotilla organiser: ‘We are a peaceful civilian movement’

Basheerah Soomar, an organiser for the Global Sumud Flotilla, outlines the mission's peaceful objectives and preparations as the aid convoy sails towards Gaza.

As the Global Sumud Flotilla continues its journey towards Gaza, global organiser Basheerah Soomar has emphasised the mission’s peaceful nature and its ultimate goal: to establish a permanent humanitarian corridor into the besieged enclave. The convoy, described as the largest of its kind, aims to challenge Israel’s 18-year blockade by delivering essential aid.

Speaking about the flotilla’s logistics, Soomar confirmed that the fleet is sailing in waves. While the main group of vessels is en route to Greece, she noted that some boats remain in Italy, preparing to join a second wave. “We are planning to meet up in international waters and catch up with them in the next couple of days,” she stated. This staggered approach is part of a broader strategy to create a continuous and sustained effort.

The core objective, she stated, extends far beyond a single aid delivery. “The main aim is to actually open up a permanent humanitarian corridor,” she explained, highlighting the ambition to create lasting change for Gaza’s population.

‘We are prepared for arrest’

Soomar acknowledged the significant risks involved, including constant surveillance and the threat of interception by Israeli forces. Activists have reported spotting unidentified drones, but she noted this was expected. “We know that we are being surveilled… It’s not anything that surprises us,” she said, conveying a sense of preparedness among the participants.

The possibility of arrest and facing serious charges is a reality the activists are ready for. In response to reports that Israeli officials may seek to label them as “terrorists,” Soomar was resolute. “We are prepared for arrest,” she affirmed, while stressing the mission’s non-violent principles. “We are a peaceful civilian movement.”

Despite the threats, she expressed optimism that the sheer scale of the international flotilla and the global attention it has garnered will act as a deterrent against a harsh Israeli response. The hope is that this pressure will compel Israel to allow the aid to reach its destination. The determination underscores the commitment of the activists as they navigate the uncertain waters ahead.
