Hamas has freed all 20 living Israeli captives held in Gaza. The release occurred on Monday as part of a ceasefire agreemen mediated by the United States. In exchange, Israel is set to release 250 Palestinian prisoners. It will also hand over 1,700 detainees. The exchange marks a significant moment in the long-running conflict.
The release happened in two stages. The first group of seven captives was transferred to the Red Cross. They then crossed into Israeli territory for medical checks. Later, a second group of 13 was handed over. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed all 20 living hostages were safely returned.
US President Donald Trump arrived in Israel to mark the event. He was welcomed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Trump is scheduled to address the Israeli parliament, the Knesset after declaring that “war is over“. However, questions remain about Gaza’s future governance. Trump is also expected to attend a peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Other world leaders will also be there.

The agreement also includes the return of the bodies of up to 28 deceased captives. The identities of the freed Israelis have been released. Emotional reunions have already taken place.
Despite skepticism, many international actors have praised the diplomatic breakthrough. The European Union announced it would restart its mission to monitor the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt with the aim of supporting the ceasefire.
