World – Vancouver-based Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network International Coordinator, Charlotte Kates, believes that Israeli comedian, and ex-soldier, Guy Hochman should be arrested and prosecuted for his role in what she describes as active participation in genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.

Hochman was detained for approximately six hours at Toronto Pearson International Airport this week following a criminal complaint filed by the Hind Rajab Foundation and allied legal groups, alleging war crimes and incitement to genocide related to his social media posts and performances tied to Gaza. The comedian was subsequently released and allowed to perform.

Kates said Hochman’s case goes beyond freedom of expression. He was enlisted as an entertainer by Israeli occupation forces and brought to Gaza in that capacity, where he engaged in what she calls direct incitement to genocide.

“Guy Hochman isn’t randomly a comedian who happens to be a Zionist. He was an actual member. He was brought to Gaza by the occupation forces. He was enlisted as an entertainer, and it was in that capacity that he routinely engaged in advocacy for the genocide of the Palestinian people and direct incitement to genocide,” she said.

The Hind Rajab Foundation, a Belgian-based Palestine solidarity organisation, submitted an extensive dossier to Canadian authorities documenting Hochman’s activities and calling for his criminal prosecution under the genocide convention.

Civil Liberties Debate

Kates argued that Canada’s handling of free expression around Palestine exposed a clear double standard. She pointed to the October 2024 designation of Samidoun as a terrorist entity, police raids on activists’ homes, and the suppression of pro-Palestinian demonstrations as examples of what she described as a selective and politically motivated application of free speech protections.

“It is very difficult to see where a freedom of expression issue arises, especially when there is a very real freedom of expression issue in Canada about Palestine. And that freedom of expression issue is the targeting of people and organisations that act in solidarity with the Palestinian people,” she said.

The case remains open as an active criminal investigation. Canadian lawyers working with the Hind Rajab Foundation intend to continue pursuing justice and accountability measures.
