Health – The black seed, long considered a staple of traditional medicine, is gaining renewed attention as a scientifically backed supplement with wide-ranging health benefits.
According to Nico Taljaard, Representative of Tibb Health Sciences, the supplement deserves a permanent place in people’s daily routines, not just during Ramadan.
Fasting reshapes the body’s rhythms in ways that go beyond hunger. Mood shifts, energy crashes, and a weakened immune system are among the most common complaints during Ramadan.
The black seed’s dense nutritional profile, which includes monosaccharides, dietary fibre, unsaturated fatty acids, amino acids, iron, calcium, and potassium, helps replenish what the body loses during long hours without food.
These nutrients support energy production, stabilise mood, and strengthen immunity, offering the body a reliable foundation to sustain the demands of fasting.
“There’s a change in immunity, there’s a change in mood — a lot of people get depressed. Irritability can definitely be one of them. Energy, especially towards the afternoon, you feel that your energy is fading.”
A Seed That Works Beyond Ramadan
The black seed’s nutritional benefits do not end with Ramadan. Its composition covers nearly every system in the body, and Taljaard is firm that limiting it to the fasting month means leaving most of its value on the table.
For those who take it consistently, the seed functions less like a supplement and more like a food, one that the body comes to rely on for sustained support across energy, immunity, and general well-being.
“This is an all-year, 24/7, 12 months a year product. It contains all these amino acids, keratene, and it contains iron, calcium, and potassium, which are important for your enzyme functions.”
What the Science Shows
According to Taljaard, research on T-cell ratios and natural killer cell activity showed a 72% increase in helper-to-suppressor cell ratios among those taking black seed.
A separate study found a 50% enhancement of T-cells and a 30% average increase in natural killer cell activity in AIDS patients.
The findings are significant given that immune system deterioration is a defining characteristic of the condition. Taljaard noted that the black seed’s impact in this space alone sets it apart from most supplements on the market.
“In people with AIDS — and we all know that’s a serious condition — the immune system enhancement of black seed is so tremendous and unbelievable.”
Taljaard added that the black seed has no known contraindications and has not been shown to interfere with chemotherapy, making it a viable option for patients managing serious illness alongside conventional treatment.
