South Africa – Salma Patel, the Executive Producer at Lotus News and SABC News Editor, has found her journey in the media industry incredibly exhilarating. Beginning her career at the Natal Witness, she was soon sought after by the SABC, which opened doors to numerous opportunities to report on international events and connect with diverse individuals, making her professional voyage delightful.

“When I was climbing the ladder, it was such fun. No two days are the same. It is absolutely amazing, and the people you meet along the way are also amazing.”

Even after nearly a quarter of a century in the industry, Patel continues to discover fascination and satisfaction throughout her career. As the saying goes, do what you love, and you will never work a day in your life.

Overcoming Obstacles as a Woman

Patel embarked on her career in the media industry during the early stages of South Africa’s democracy, when all sectors were integrating, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds.

While Patel’s journey in the industry has been personally fulfilling, it was not devoid of challenges. Some individuals continued to believe that specific roles were not suitable for women.

Although the struggle for equality posed its challenges, it was not insurmountable. With time, these obstacles would find resolution, and these are the memories which Patel cherishes the most.

“I came from a generation where we were already integrated, but we still had to fight things like discrimination among women. I came in at a time when women earned less than men. Our salaries had to be adjusted over the years. It was a difficult fight, but we managed to do it.”

Breaking Barriers in the Media Industry

Patel pointed out, while Muslim women generally received respect, there were lingering disparities among women, especially concerning salaries and specific opportunities.

Moreover, there persisted issues of ignorance and misunderstanding toward individuals of various ethnicities, races and faiths. Nevertheless, many of these challenges were successfully addressed and resolved over time and with concerted effort.

“We had colleagues from all different races and religions, [which] made it easy for us to learn about their cultures, where they come from, what their arguments are and challenges they face. As a woman, it was quite exciting because you’re a Muslim woman in this organisation and someone who is trying to make a change.”

While challenges, especially regarding gender and diversity, persisted, Patel’s dedication and determination paved the way for change. Her story is a compelling reminder that pursuing your passion can transform your occupation into a lifelong source of joy and fulfilment.
