Gaza – South Africa has welcomed Amnesty International’s latest report, which documents the ongoing genocide of Palestinians in Gaza. Known for its independent and thorough research, Amnesty has once again exposed the harrowing reality of the violence, giving a voice to those suffering in silence.

“This report strengthens South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice and reflects similar findings from the United Nations,” officials have noted.

Experts from around the world have echoed these findings. Dr Tlaleng Mofokeng, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Health, described Gaza as “a wasteland of rubble and human remains.”

Survivors, she noted, are struggling to hold on amid unimaginable destruction, with once-functioning clinics and hospitals reduced to debris. Her words capture the sheer scale of the devastation and the absence of even the most basic human rights.

Similarly, Ms Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories, urged the world to acknowledge what is happening in Gaza as genocide.

She pointed out that while Palestinians have endured decades of oppression and war crimes, this moment stands out for its extraordinary cruelty. “The broader design behind the current situation in Palestine is different,” she explained, noting the alarming escalation in violence.

Amnesty International’s work reminds the world of human rights defenders’ vital role in exposing injustice. South Africa has called on the global community to protect those who take on this critical work, often at significant personal risk. The country continues to advocate for an immediate ceasefire and decisive international action to protect Palestinian lives.
