Syria – There’s been a range of reactions from world governments and state leaders following the toppling of President Bashar Assad by rebel forces over the weekend. While some have welcomed the power shift, others have voiced concerns about its impact on global security, regional stability, and the humanitarian situation, calling for a peaceful transition of power.
For many Syrians, however, this marks a moment of profound change. Dana Rajjoub, a Syrian national based in South Africa, described it as a “dream” and historic victory, symbolising long-awaited freedom.
“The streets of Damascus and all homes in Syria are alive with celebration and hope. It’s a new dawn for the city and for the people. Syrians hope now that the future is a better place for all of us as we’ve been waiting for this moment for over 50 years.”
On Sunday, rebel forces swiftly advanced across the country, seizing the capital and ending Assad’s 24-year rule. Thousands of political prisoners were freed from detention as reports surfaced that Assad had fled to Russia, where he and his family were granted asylum.

UN Secretary-General Calls for Calm and Order in Syria
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the significance of this turning point, stating, “After 14 years of brutal war and the fall of the dictatorial regime, today the people of Syria can seize a historic opportunity to build a stable and peaceful future.”
Guterres cautioned that significant challenges remain, particularly in achieving a smooth political transition and establishing inclusive institutions. He stressed the importance of protecting the rights of all Syrians and urged all sides to avoid violence during this fragile period.
“We will need the support of the international community to ensure that any political transition is inclusive and comprehensive and that it meets the legitimate aspirations of the people of Syria, in all their diversity. Syria’s sovereignty, unity, independence and territorial integrity must be restored.”
He concluded by reaffirming the UN’s commitment to the Syrian people: “The UN will honour the memory of those who have borne the brunt of this conflict. We remain committed to helping Syrians build a country where reconciliation, justice, freedom, and prosperity are shared realities for all. This is the path to sustainable peace in Syria.”
