NDPP: Ramaphosa appoints Andy Mothibi as new head

A legal challenge seeks to block the appointment of the former SIU boss.

by Zahid Jadwat

President Cyril Ramaphosa has appointed Andy Mothibi as the new National Director of Public Prosecutions. The announcement was made on Tuesday to fill the upcoming vacancy at the National Prosecuting Authority. However, an urgent court bid was filed to halt the process.

The applicants in the court case argue that the appointment process was not transparent. They believe the President did not follow the necessary steps for a fair selection. These groups are asking the court to review the decision-making process immediately. They want to ensure that the selection of the top prosecutor remains independent.

Legal challenges and reactions

Mothibi is currently the head of the Special Investigating Unit. He has earned a reputation for being a firm and effective leader. If the legal bid is successful, the appointment of the NDPP head could be delayed.

The NPA has faced many challenges in recent years regarding high-profile prosecutions. Critics of the appointment claim that a more public process was required. They argue that the public should have had more insight into the candidates.
