A political analyst suggests Parks Tau could be the answer to the African National Congress’s search for a convincing candidate in Johannesburg.
In an interview with Salaamedia on Tuesday, Professor Sam Koma of North-West University (NWU) suggested the party was looking for a high-profile cadre to compete against the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Helen Zille and ActionSA’s Herman Mashaba.
“When the ANC looks at its internal pool of members and leaders, they have realised that they may have to deploy someone from national [structures] who can match the capability and calibre of the likes of Helen Zille and also Herman Mashaba,” said Koma.
Tau was the ANC’s mayor in Johannesburg when it lost the city in 2016. Since then, he has served in the provincial and national cabinets. He is currently the minister of trade, industry and competition.
