Salaamedia yesterday reported that the Lenasia police arrested a 62-year-old travel operator on Monday morning for allegedly defrauding Muslim pilgrims of hundreds of thousands of rands. It is alleged that the travel operator defrauded members of the Muslim community, and bribed travel organisations.

Lenasia SAPS spokesperson, Captain Hector Netshivhodza, confirmed to Salaamedia yesterday that the suspect was due to appear in the Lenasia Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday morning. Salaamedia’s Ponty Moletsane was present outside the court today.

“The suspect did not appear in court today. She will appear only tomorrow. However, the suspect’s husband [who was also arrested yesterday] appeared in court this morning for defeating the ends of justice because he refused to provide the police with the suspect’s whereabouts when they went to the house yesterday to arrest her,” Moletsane reported.

The suspect was later found in her house and arrested.

Due to the lockdown, only those directly connected to the case were allowed inside the court building.
