#ReduceRentForApril

Salaamedia’s Mariam Mia on Thursday spoke on the Alternative View regarding the economic and social impact of the lockdown on South Africans, particularly their monthly commitment of paying rent to their landlords.

“If we see, about 40-50% of a South African’s income goes towards paying rent. This is a huge portion of one’s salary,” said Mia.

“That is why, Salaamedia and Salaam Foundation is humbling appealing to all landlords – residential and commercial – to reduce their tenants’ rent for the month of April in light of the lockdown. A minimum of 10% reduction will go a long way to buffer the financial effects of the lockdown.”

“We always say that charity begins at home. Your tenants are one of those closest to you, so show compassion and generosity towards them,” appealed Mia.

“This gesture of kindness and compassion, and the act of solidarity will be duly noted in the annals of South African history.”
