As the world prepares for 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, H.E. Hanan Jarrar, Palestine’s ambassador to South Africa, has drawn attention to conditions for women in Gaza.

Speaking ahead of the global campaign, which is set to begin on Friday, Jarrar said: “As we begin the UN campaign of 16 days of no violence against women and children, I beg you to bear in mind that Palestinian women and children are the main targets of the Israeli occupation”.

The women of Gaza are especially vulnerable to Israel’s relentless aggression towards the enclave. 70% of those killed in the genocidal war were women, according to a report by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

“I am running out of words as an ambassador, as a woman, as an activist, as a wife, as a mother and, above all, as a human,” she told those gathered at Freedom Park Heritage Site. “Words have become meaningless for us and are insufficient to describe our reality, our pain and our suffering.”
