The Last Sky Exposes Israel’s War and Palestinian Struggle

by Muskaan Ayesha

Nicholas Hanna’s documentary, The Last Sky, is more than just a film – it’s a testament to the resilience of the Palestinian people and the brutality they continue to endure. Filmed in Lebanon and Occupied Gaza, Hanna’s work sheds light on the realities of Israel’s war on Gaza and the ongoing genocide against Palestinians, a reality the world either ignores or justifies.

“The current genocide in Gaza started on the 7th of October 2023. During that time, I decided to raise awareness to the people in Sydney,” Hanna states.

But while October 7th marked an escalation, the genocide did not begin that day. It has been unfolding for decades, through occupation, ethnic cleansing and systematic apartheid. From the Nakba of 1948 to the siege on Gaza, the destruction of Palestinian lives has been relentless. What we see today is a continuation, not an anomaly.

Hanna’s documentary doesn’t just expose Israeli war crimes; it also confronts a question many refuse to ask, why do so many Palestinians support armed struggle? The answer isn’t simple, but it is necessary to understand.

Decades of displacement, oppression, and massacres have left Palestinians with few options. When international law fails them, and peaceful resistance is met with bullets, many see resistance, by any means necessary, as survival.

“I think this is considered to be the deadliest for journalists, and that’s according to the international community that protects journalists. The real heroes are the journalists in Gaza, who every day of the genocide risk their lives to tell the world what was happening there.” The war on Palestine is not just fought with bombs but with narratives. Western media distorts facts, silences Palestinian voices, and amplifies Israeli propaganda. The journalists on the ground, those who risk their lives daily to report the truth, are the real heroes.

Footage in The Last Sky was generously donated by an Arabic television station, bringing raw, unfiltered truth to audiences. This documentary is essential viewing for anyone who seeks to understand the war on Gaza, Israel’s broader regional ambitions, and the growing tensions with Hezbollah.

The genocide of Palestine has been ongoing for decades. The world is only watching now, but for Palestinians, it never stopped.
