SANMWF Works on Building School That Changes Futures

South African women unite with Turkish NGO to support West Bank education project.

by Muskaan Ayesha

When the South African National Muslim Women’s Forum (SANMWF) met with a Turkish NGO earlier this year, a powerful vision began to take shape: a Waqf school in Palestine’s West Bank. Now, under the leadership of CEO and spokesperson Shamshad Sayed, and chair Hawa Patel, the forum is working with global partners to bring education and hope to one of the most devastated regions in the world.

The initiative was inspired by shared concern over the destruction of Palestinian schools and the urgent need to rebuild. Several chairs across forums agreed to unite on a project that focuses on education in the al-Aizariya area. These Waqf schools are not just about academics, they serve to uplift underprivileged communities and reduce deep-rooted social and economic disparity.

Chair Hawa Patel called attention to the purpose behind the work: “Knowledge is a weapon.” A powerful statement that echoes the forum’s belief in education as a means of empowerment and resistance.

Dr. Faheema Ismail of the Houghton wing elaborated on the heart of the initiative, saying, “The whole purpose… is to emphasize on charity, education and community development.” She also explained the long-term impact of the model, adding, “It’s a form of ongoing charity… the donor continuously benefits from this project even after their death.” With urgency in her voice, she emphasized, “In Palestine every school was bombarded… and there’s such a need for schools.”

How are they raising funds?

To raise funds and create awareness, the chair of the Somalian Women’s Forum proposed hosting a lunch or dinner. SANMWF took up the idea and will be holding a fundraising event on 18 May at Balmoral in De Deur. The event will outline the school’s purpose, structure, and how supporters can get involved. Dr. Nasreen Mahomed, as the event auction coordinator, is overseeing the planning.

As the project continues to gain momentum, it becomes clear this is more than just a school, it’s a step towards reclaiming dignity, preserving identity, and building a future for generations to come.
