World – The South African government has urged all parties to immediately de-escalate tensions and commit to a ceasefire following a Russian air strike on the village of Yarova in Eastern Ukraine.
The attack reportedly killed more than 20 people, many of them elderly civilians who had gathered to collect pension payments.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, drew widespread condemnation. Yarova, predominantly inhabited by pensioners, has now become the focus of international concern as images of destroyed homes and injured civilians spread across global media outlets.
Civilian Toll Condemned
The Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) said it was deeply troubled by the ongoing attacks on innocent people.
“We continue to see attacks against civilians and civilian installations in breach of the principle of distinction,” the department said.
South Africa emphasised that respect for international law is a cornerstone of global stability.
The principle of distinction under humanitarian law requires parties in armed conflict to always differentiate between combatants and civilians, as well as between military and civilian targets.
“The deliberate targeting of non-combatants is a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and human rights laws and principles. Such breaches of international law escalate current global tensions,” DIRCO added.
Support for Global Mediation
The government also underlined its backing for international mediation efforts. It said South Africa supports the United Nations and other organisations striving to resolve the conflict through peaceful means.
Dialogue and negotiation, it argued, remain the only viable path to end the war and protect those who are most vulnerable.
“South Africa remains committed to playing a constructive role in advancing peace and stability globally, and calls on all nations to work together to prevent further suffering and bloodshed, prioritising the protection of civilians.”
