Ghana champions campaign for a borderless Africa

A Ghana-led initiative is pushing for visa-free travel across the continent.

A new campaign to create a borderless Africa is gaining momentum across the continent. Ghana, in collaboration with various African tourism and social movements, has launched the Trans-Africa Tourism and Unity Campaign.

The initiative aims to remove visa restrictions that hinder the free movement of people and goods. This push supports the African Union’s long-term vision, Agenda 2063, for a more integrated and prosperous continent.

Social movements and civil society organisations are central to this call for change. At a recent conference in Accra, leaders urged African governments to implement policies that make mobility easier for work, study, and trade.

Ebrima Sall, the Executive Director of TrustAfrica, highlighted the difficulties Africans face when travelling within their own continent. He stressed the need to simplify or eliminate visa requirements to unlock economic potential.

A journey for unity

The campaign is being spearheaded by activist Ras Mubarak. He is leading a 163-day journey across 40,000 kilometres. Mubarak will meet with heads of state to advocate for the removal of travel barriers.

The goal is to transform Africa into a single, seamless destination for tourism and trade within the next five years. Proponents argue that easier travel will stimulate local businesses, create jobs, and allow for greater cultural exchange.

While the vision for a borderless Africa is widely supported, significant challenges remain. Political instability, poor governance, and competing national interests have historically undermined pan-African ideals. Some nations fear that open markets could harm domestic industries. For example, less industrialised countries worry about competition from more developed economies.

However, advocates insist that the long-term benefits of integration far outweigh these concerns. They point out that a more connected continent is crucial for achieving shared prosperity and stability. The success of this ambitious project for a borderless Africa depends on the political will of leaders to prioritise continental unity over narrow national interests.
