Local – A five-person team of senior South African Police Service (SAPS) investigators has been deployed to France following the tragic death of South African Ambassador to France and former Police Minister, Mr Nathi Mthethwa.

The decision was confirmed by SAPS National Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, who briefed Police Minister Firoz Cachalia after consultations with the relevant French authorities.

The team, led by Major General Maghashalala, the Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection in the Western Cape, will work alongside French law enforcement agencies.

The deployment aims to ensure that the circumstances around Ambassador Mthethwa’s passing are thoroughly investigated. French and South African authorities have committed to close cooperation throughout the process.

Minister Cachalia said the collaboration would strengthen the investigation and demonstrate South Africa’s commitment to accountability. He stressed the importance of supporting French counterparts while ensuring transparency on South Africa’s part.

“The deployment of these investigators reflects our commitment to ensuring that every effort is made to establish the full facts surrounding this tragedy. We will offer all necessary support to our counterparts in France and remain in close contact with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) throughout the process,” he stated.

The Minister also paid tribute to Ambassador Mthethwa, describing him as a patriot who had dedicated his career to public service. He noted that the news of his death had resonated deeply within diplomatic, political, and public circles.

“Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time,” he stated.

The SAPS confirmed that updates on the investigation will be shared in due course. Officials said this would be done in consultation with French authorities and DIRCO to maintain transparency and accountability.
