World – Israeli attacks have been observed across multiple locations in south Lebanon, further heightening tension along the border and raising renewed concern over breaches of international agreements.

United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers confirmed that a series of Israeli airstrikes struck villages within their operational zone on Tuesday afternoon.

The strikes hit Marounah, Majadel and Baraashit as the Lebanese Armed Forces continued operations to dismantle unauthorised weapons and infrastructure in the south.

The developments have added strain to an already fragile security environment governed by strict ceasefire conditions under United Nations Security Council resolution 1701.

The timing of the attacks has intensified fears of escalation, particularly as both sides remain on high alert following months of heightened cross-border tension.

UNIFIL has reiterated that maintaining calm and communication remains essential to preventing a broader conflict.

“These actions are clear violations of Security Council resolution 1701… We urge the Israel Defense Forces to avail of the liaison and coordination mechanisms available to them.”

Risk of Escalation Along the Border

UNIFIL also warned that any retaliatory response from within Lebanon could worsen the situation and place further strain on the fragile security environment along the border.

The mission said restraint remains crucial amid ongoing regional instability.

With tensions remaining high between Israel and armed groups in the south, the risk of miscalculation continues to grow as military activity persists on both sides of the border.

UNIFIL stressed that even limited responses risk triggering wider confrontation.

“We caution Lebanese actors against any reaction that could aggravate the situation further.”

Peacekeepers Come Under Fire Near Bint Jbeil

Later that night, the situation deteriorated further when peacekeepers on patrol near Bint Jbeil were targeted in a shooting incident.

Six men riding three mopeds approached the patrol vehicle, and one of the men fired approximately three shots into the back of the car.

No injuries were reported, but the incident has intensified concerns over the safety of international forces operating in the area and the growing risks faced by peacekeepers on the ground.

The attack has also renewed focus on the obligations of local authorities under international law.

“Attacks on peacekeepers are unacceptable and serious violations of resolution 1701.”

“We remind the Lebanese authorities of their obligations to ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers, and demand a full and immediate investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice.”

The mission warned that sustained adherence to the agreement remains central to preserving the limited stability achieved to date.

“Both parties must adhere to their commitments and obligations under the resolution and to the understanding reached in November, if they are to safeguard the progress achieved so far.”
