Ashraful Aid is a South African non-governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated to serving vulnerable communities through emergency humanitarian relief, medical assistance, education, and community development. Guided by compassion and a commitment to preserving human dignity, the organisation provides support to those affected by crises both within South Africa and beyond its borders.
Following calls by South African citizens for undocumented foreign nationals to leave the country, thousands of these people were displaced and found themselves in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. As the situation unfolded, many vulnerable individuals—including women, children, newborn babies, and families—were left without access to shelter, food, water, and other basic necessities.
Responding with urgency and compassion, Ashraful Aid immediately mobilised experienced staff, essential resources, and hundreds of dedicated volunteers to deliver lifesaving humanitarian assistance to those affected.
Working on the ground, relief teams were sent out to some of the worst-affected areas, including Durban (Sherwood), Johannesburg (China Consulates), Shongweni, and Musina. Their swift response ensured that important humanitarian assistance reached vulnerable communities without delay.
Throughout the emergency response, the organisation reported providing:
– 36,000 hot, nutritious meals.
– Medical treatment to numerous patients.
– More than 2,000 units of drinking water.
– 1,000 packs of nappies and wet wipes.
– 1,500 tins of baby formula.
– Safe transportation for more than 1,200 displaced individuals.
One of the features of the emergency response was the spirit of unity displayed across South Africa. More than 400 dedicated volunteers joined forces with a broad coalition of humanitarian organisations, community partners, religious institutions, and local residents.
Looking ahead, Ashraful Aid has recommended the establishment of a community who can work together to ensure future humanitarian responses are organised and efficient. The organisation believes that strengthening partnerships between humanitarian organisations, government and local communities will enable future emergencies to be managed more effectively.
