South Africa – Ibn Abbas reported: Nabi (SAW) said, “The best water on the face of the earth is Zamzam water. In it is food for nourishment and healing for illness.” (al-Mu’jam al-Kabīr 11011)

Zamzam water is one of the miracles of Allah (SWT). Research has shown that it contains minerals such as calcium, magnesium and fluoride. However, many do not get to experience this blessed water which is why the Fordsburg Muslim Youth Organisation (FMYO) has embarked on the Zamzam initiative.

The Zamzam initiative

As Maulana Taahir Salloo, Member of FMYO and Imaam of Mayfair Jumma Masjid, explained, not many people have the ability to visit the Holy Lands to drink Zamzam water. It is only during Ramadan they get to drink this miracle water. The Zamzam initiative aims to ensure that every masjid has Zamzam to offer to those breaking their fast by offering three 5ltr Zamzam water bottles for free.

“The objective behind this is that when people make iftar (the evening meal to break their fast) predominantly in the masjid at least there will be some Zamzam that will be present there … Some have never had the good fortune of having Zamzam at home. So this was just a little effort to try and make sure that we can get Zamzam as far as possible throughout the country.”

According to Maulana Salloo, many masaajid across the country have requested Zamzam water. The distribution part of the process has already started. FMYO also plans to send Zamzam water to Masjidul Aqsa which will be used throughout Ramadan.

The other initiatives that FMYO carry out

Besides the Zamzam initiative, FMYO is also involved in the management of burials, maintenance of qabrastans and social welfare. Maulana Sallo mentioned an incident that occurred this year which encapsulates what FMYO is all about and the strength of the Muslim community.

“There was a little baby that passed away and the parents were not from South Africa. The mother said, We are in a completely foreign country. We know absolutely nobody who will attend my child’s janaza’. FMYO performed the ghusl which took place at Mayfair Jumma Masjid and it was on a Friday. After Jummah salah, the announcement was made that there is a janaza taking place … There was such a huge crowd that the mother was in tears. She said, ‘I cannot believe the strength of the ummah that people who don’t even know came out to read Salatul janaza upon my child’.”

For this reason, Maulana Sallo has implored the youth to get involved in such organisations and activities. It is not only a benefit to oneself but also to the community. Many lives can be changed just by one person lending a helping hand.
