Trump administration faces scrutiny over Iran war costs

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth defends military spending amid rising regional tensions.

United States Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth faced a second day of rigorous questioning on Capitol Hill on Thursday, 30 April 2026. The Senate armed services committee convened to scrutinise the Trump administration’s 2027 military budget proposal. This proposal seeks to boost defence spending to a historic $1.5 trillion as the Iran war continues to impact global markets.

During the proceedings, Hegseth defended the administration’s handling of the conflict against accusations of mismanagement from Democrats. The Pentagon currently estimates that the military operations have cost the United States at least $25 billion.

Despite these figures, Hegseth denied that the situation has become a quagmire. He instead described the mission as a success, accusing critics of providing propaganda to enemies of the state.

Political tension and economic impact

The hearings highlight deep political divisions in Washington regarding the ongoing Iran war. California Democrat John Garamendi criticised the administration for what he termed “astounding incompetence.”

He argued that the conflict has led to economic and political disasters at multiple levels. In response, Hegseth suggested that political opposition was blinding critics to the tactical truths of the mission.

The Senate is also expected to address concerns regarding diminishing stockpiles of critical weapons. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer announced that Democrats intend to force a sixth vote on a war powers resolution this week. This move aims to increase oversight as the Iran war rages on.
