Cyclist pedals for peace across Africa

Congolese triathlete completes 3 000 km solo journey to Cape Town.

Miguel Masaisai, a triathlete from Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has completed a remarkable three-month solo cycling journey of about 3 000 kilometres to Cape Town. Beginning on 17 May and finishing on 10 August, his mission was more than a test of endurance, it was a ride to promote peace across Africa.

Masaisai spent over a year preparing for the ride, training his body, mapping his route, and securing visas. He faced stretches of road without villages, unpredictable weather, and encounters with wild animals.

Without a support vehicle, he depended on strangers for food, shelter, and encouragement. “I left Goma with hope to pedal for peace without anything. But today I’m here in South Africa. Because I didn’t give up on the dream I had,” he said.

Peace beyond personal achievement

Masaisai’s goal was to inspire others in Congo and beyond, showing that dreams can be pursued even without sponsorship or abundant resources. “I wanted to show them that if you have a dream, you cannot give up… you have just to prepare yourself and follow your journey. Your dream,” he explained. Along the way, communities welcomed him with open arms, offering meals, safe places to rest, and words of encouragement.

Masaisai returned home proud and exhausted, already thinking about his next challenge to raise awareness for peace in Congo. “Firstly I can say I’m very proud of myself and proud of the achievement. I feel tired… and also proud of myself,” he said. His ride is a testament to resilience, hope, and the unifying power of human kindness.
