President Ramaphosa on Monday night announced a 21-day national lockdown amid the coronavirus. Ramaphosa said: “The National Coronavirus Command Council has decided to enforce a nation-wide lockdown for 21 days with effect from midnight on Thursday, 26 March 2020 until midnight on Thursday 16 April 2020.”
After this announcement, many South Africans took to social media claiming that Ramaphosa’s lockdown announcement was vague and ambiguous. Some speculated that the lockdown starting at midnight mean midnight at the beginning of Thursday, whilst others maintained that it refers to midnight at the end of Thursday. To clear this confusion, spokesperson to the President, Khusela Diko, spoke to News24 on Tuesday. She said: “The lockdown will begin at 23:59 on Thursday evening. Therefore, day one of the lockdown will be Friday.”
