Secretary-General of Jamiatul Ulama South Africa, Maulana Ebrahim Bham, spoke to Salaamedia’s Inayet Wadee regarding Coronavirus in South Africa. He started the on-air discussion by stating that the United Ulama Council of South Africa (UUCSA) had during the course of last week prepared certain guidelines in light of the coronavirus outbreak which they planned to release on Sunday morning. However, the release of those guidelines was placed on hold until the President addressed the nation on Sunday night.

Bham confirmed that UUCSA has given certain guidelines to Masjids, and have requested them to adhere to those guidelines.

When asked about his opinion on President Ramaphosa’s Sunday night address, Bham said: “We have to adhere to the President’s announcements as responsible citizens of this country.”

Bham reiterated that there are theological precedents in our Sharia to curb such plagues, for example, remaining at home to perform one’s Salaah as the Prophet once did due to bad weather.

“Have a positive mindset, place your trust in the Almighty, but also tie your camel by avoiding social contact, large gatherings, etc.,” said Bham. He further said: “We understand that there is a great reward for congregational prayers, but there is also an emphasis on solitary worship, such as performing your Sunnah Salaah at home.”

When asked about guidelines for the Jumuah prayers, Bham said: “We need to be innovative by having separate prayer facilities at different times, having Jamaat immediately after the Adhan, short Khutbas and Salaah.”

“Most importantly,” Bham said, “we shouldn’t forget to make Dua and turn towards the Almighty in all our affairs.”
