The University of Johannesburg on Monday, 16 March 2020 announced that it has established a COVID-19 Coordinating Committee (CCC) to “assess and consider measures to mitigate risks associated with the pandemic.” The University has taken further measures since President Ramaphosa’s Sunday night nation address to further reduce the risk of exposure. It has suspended all classes, tests and practicals, however, teaching and learning will continue via online platforms. Furthermore, the University has suspended all autumn graduation ceremonies, but it will issue digital certificates to its graduates. More details in this regard are expected to follow shortly.

The University has instructed its employees to report for duty, but will ensure that employees “work remotely”. It has also suspended all its intercampus bus service until further notice. Notably, the University will allow its resident students, postdoctoral research fellows and international students to remain in their on-campus residence for the upcoming autumn recess due to the potential challenge of finding alternative accommodation in this current situation. When telephoned by Salaamedia for a comment on the University’s plans on its first mid-semester recess, the University’s Registrar’s PA said: “The recess will go ahead as planned from 21 March to 29 March 2020, but the University is in consultation with the MEC to consider reducing the first-semester recess to not miss out on academic days.”

The University has vowed to keep all its stakeholders updated via its social media.
