As the number of coronavirus cases fast approach a million worldwide, concerns have been raised about a shortage of supply of protective gear for health practitioners working at the forefront of the fight against the pandemic.

Hospitals in Gauteng have approached the Salaam Foundation requesting supplies. Salaamedia’s Azhar Vadi spoke to Gauteng Department of Health spokesperson Kwara Kekana on The Alternative View.

She said that whilst there are fears that supplies may run out due to a sudden spike in demand, the department has been receiving supplies continuously.

“There is a continuous procurement of equipment by the Department of Health, but of course there is a concern for the global shortage because of the high demand.”

Responding to concerns that the lives of health workers may be put at risk as they work to fight Covid-19, Kekana said: “Our priority is to ensure that staff in the department are safe.”
