Pandemic inspired Ndivhuwo Dlamini to build furniture!

We’ve all tried DIY activities, with some success, when the world went into hibernation. For Ndivhuwo Dlamini, the founder of Remedial DIY, circumstances inspired her to make her own furniture and now people are going crazy for it!

When Dlamini moved into a new home during the Covid-19 pandemic, things were not too good on the economic side of things, she recalled. That’s when she decided to try her shot at designing and building her own furniture.

“We moved in a different space, during Covid, and the world economy was not the best and buying things was very expensive at the time. The best thing for me to do was just to actually start to make furniture,” she said.

Today, more than 30 000 Instagram followers are keeping a keen eye on her products. Even so, she considers herself to be “just a normal, ordinary person who loves the good things in life”.

Being a business property consultant and a content creator, she said, was at times challenging but it’s “nothing hectic”.

Social media presence

For those wanting to build a brand, Ndivhuwo Dlamini said social media is definitely “where it’s happening”. She said aspiring entrepreneurs and creators need to hop aboard and use these tools to their advantage.

“It’s actually amazing if you want to be recognised and also [create] brand awareness,” she said. However, Dlamini advised creators to understand the users of each platform and use them accordingly.

“What I’ve noticed is that it’s actually a different market – Instagram people are not the same as Facebook Market. You’re reaching many different people, so that’s why I started to document all my journeys through the many different platforms on social media,” said Dlamini.

Life-work balance

Balancing between being a mum, a property consultant and a DIY content creator is a lot to juggle. But Ndivhuwo Dlamini was still trying to figure it out, although she knew her priority was being a mother to her children. Taking time for herself was also important.

“I try as much as I can to be able to fit in spirituality; to fit in my own personal time. It has to be part of us [and] you need to be able to be an all-rounded person altogether. I’m still trying to figure out that perfect balance,” she said.

Despite the adjustment demanded by the pandemic, working from home has made her life much easier without the need to spend time commuting around.

“Monday through Friday, it’s hectic but my weekends are beautiful and I can be able to rest. There’s nothing hectic, to be honest. I work from home, so it makes life easier.”

Ndivhuwo Dlamini’s advice for others is to believe in themselves and fulfil their tasks with confidence. She explained being confident in what you do will lead others to recognise your talent, which can be encouraging.
