Hatay – The Hatay province once known for its luxurious tourist spots and cultural centres is just a shell of its former self. Marvellous tall buildings now lay crumpled on the streets and the ones that still stand are dark and empty. Where residents once sat watching the beautiful neighbourhood,  rescue workers sift through the rubble. Hoping that those who they love may still have survived. Salaamedia’s ground reporter, Hasina Gori, provides an update on the province.

Some residents watch on as rescue workers remove the rubble. Others, exhausted and devastated, try to come to terms with their loss. The earthquake and the destruction it has left has taken its toll on everyone. Makeshift fires keep the residents warms as their souls weary hoping for some good news Video Hasina Gori.

Rescue workers and residents look on at the destruction. The buildings that remain have not gone without damage. Most are leaning over and have deep cracks running all the way to the foundation. Even though they stand tall, they will most likely be torn down Video Hasina Gori

Huge dump trucks are filled with rubble clearing the way. Buildings that took months to build are being cleared out within days along with the memories made in them. Residents can only watch on as their homes are removed by the heavy machinery Video Hasina Gori

Stunning homes have been reduced to rubble. Heavy machinery is being used to tear down what remains. Apartments lean over, almost ready to collapse. The once beautiful walls are covered with dust and sand. The walls and windows cracked and shattered just like the spirits of those who once lived in them Video Hasina Gori

Clothes lay about for those who have lost everything. Organisations have asked for people to donate warm, functional and clothes in good condition. Many have only the clothes on their back to keep their warm Video Hasina Gori

A few fruits and vegetables to satisfy the hunger of those in need. People hurriedly grab what is available. There is no telling when food will be available again. They fill their pockets and return to their families, taking only what they need and nothing more Video Hasina Gori

A family has created a makeshift tent for them and whatever belongings they could save. The tent is made up of a plastic sheet and held up by a few poles. Planks are being used as a floor to keep their bodies off the cold., hard concrete. The planks also double as a bed for them. It is far from the comfortable life they once had Video Hasina Gori

Shopkeepers are eager to remove their goods from their shops. There have been reports that shopkeepers fear they may get looted or another aftershock will bring the shop down. They are now hoping things settle quickly so the rebuild can begin Video Hasina Gori

Life must continue even while great tragedy is being faced. An old woman prepares food on a fire. Using a drum and some firewood, she is able to start a fire and prepare food. Even in such conditions, people are finding solutions to their problems Video Hasina Gori

Entire communities have been razed to the grounds. Shops, apartment and complexes have been destroyed completely. Buildings lay upon each other in the streets. The only way to tell what was once there is by the signs that are stuck in the ground. It will be a long time before life can return to normal Video Hasina Gori
