Ongoing talks between the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and others have not fallen into crisis. So says Mkhuleko Hlengwa, spokesperson of the IFP.
According to The Citizen, the spokesperson said: “Things that are happening during the negotiation don’t mean there are troubles within the formation of the new government”.
He was referring to recent reports of tensions between the ANC and DA. The two largest parties are competing for key portfolios in Cabinet. Their respective leaders had a face-to-face meeting on Monday.
Verashni Pillay, founder of explain.co.za, in an interview with Salaamedia’s Selaelo Makhwidiri was of the view that the DA’s stating its demands was nothing out of the ordinary.
She said the unfolding tussle was part of coalition talks. While the DA helped to install the ANC’s Cyril Ramaphosa as president of the country, the specifics of the incoming government need to be ironed out.
“The original coalition agreement was done in such high-pressured circumstances that the three parties that were the main signatories [ANC, DA and IFP] didn’t have much time to hammer out the details. They just wanted to get the president into place and the parliament speaker into place. That was the big deadline.”
